Dr Barrie G. James is President of Pharma Strategy Consulting, which he founded in 1990. He specialises in developing solutions to fundamental strategic and operating problems, and providing insights, futures and scenario expertise to help pharmaceutical and biomedical clients anticipate and profit from change.

Formerly Head of Marketing Development at the Pharmaceutical Division of Ciba-Geigy (now Novartis), Dr James was responsible for an internal consulting service operating worldwide, and over a six year period successfully completed major consulting assignments in 18 countries, covering a wide range of operating and strategic management issues.

Earlier in his career Dr James held executive positions in strategic planning, business development and operating management with Merck & Co, Syntex, Schering-Plough and Biogen, in both the United States and Europe. He has worked in most of the major countries in the Americas, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, and has over 30 years experience working in and with pharmaceutical and biomedical companies.

He holds a Masters (1979) and a Doctoral degree (1981) in Management from Brunel University in the UK. His books and reports on pharmaceuticals have become standard industry reference works, and he has been quoted in The Economist, Business Week and the Financial Times. His latest book, The Little Black Book of Pharma Marketing was published in 2002.
